Hi Matthew
We have commissioned a number of games, but they have usually been more
interactives with a learning agenda, a typical example of this is: My
Culture Quest
http://www.mylearning.org/interactive.asp?journeyid=238&resourceid=587
However, recently for China in Yorkshire we dipped our toes in the water
of real games, in the genre apparently of an 'adventure' game.
Yong's China Quest is designed for 10 -14 year olds. It has 3 levels. It
takes an average of ten minutes for that age of child to do each level.
Most adults can't get to Level 3 including me which made it very hard to
proof without the help of a young person!
What we learnt about commissioning this kind of game is that the
designers tend to be fanatical games designers/players and can be very
precious about their designs. They assure you that children are
completely familiar with navigation styles and visual pointers. That is
true of fanatical games playing children, but not necessarily generally.
I can give you examples of different briefs we've written and costings
for different games if that would help. We usually invite about 4
companies to tender.

Subject: commissioning games
Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of commissioning games for your website?
We're looking at re-developing our children's section of the website and
are starting to think about how we approach development of a number of
games that we have ideas for. Do we do all the scoping and write really
tight briefs that we then get freelance Flash developers to build for
us, or do we go to one company with lots of experience and work up the
ideas together.... Any thoughts or reccomendations for companies on or
off list would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Matthew
