There's a fantastic post on the Dopplr blog about how their social travel service learns what you mean when you tell it about dates and places: http://blog.dopplr.com/2008/07/23/how-dopplr-learns/
It's obviously a very different use of this information than collections management (future rather than past) but there's much we can learn from it. At the most basic level, they link to this module for date extraction:
http://search.cpan.org/~sartak/Date-Extract-0.03/lib/Date/Extract.pm
(Incidentally, Matt Biddulph came to the NMM with Tom Coates last year to talk to us about the 'web of data'. Much of what they said then is also worth pointing to again - http://www.hackdiary.com/slides/xtech2005/ and http://www.plasticbag.org/files/native/)
