Most recent vital event registration information now available for the ONS
Longitudinal Study

The annual refresh of vital event registrations linked to the ONS
Longitudinal Study (LS) was completed in July 2008.

Information collected by the ONS from vital event registrations is linked
to the LS. Event data are linked to LS members' records, including
information on the type and date of event and its accompanying information.

Researchers using the LS now have access to more vital event information to
use in their research. Data from event registrations from 1971 to 2006 are
now available for all events except cancer registrations, which are
available to 2005.

In conjunction with the annual refresh of vital event data the Longitudinal
Study Development Team (LSDT) and the National Health Service Central
Register (NHSCR) Tracing Team also carried out an exercise to submit all
those LS members who were untraced at 2001 to tracing again, resulting in
nearly 600 now being traced and where appropriate census and immigrant
records rationalised. The LS data dictionary has also been updated to
coincide with the 2008 refresh of vital events occurring to LS members.

Further information about the 2008 LS refresh of vital event data is
available by contacting LS User Support staff. Contact details for LS User
Support staff can be found at either the CeLSIUS (Centre for Longitudinal
Study Information and User Support, www.celsius.lshtm.ac.uk) or ONS LS
(www.ons.gov.uk/about/who-we-are/our-services/longitudinal-study) websites.
