I looked at apprenticeship records (Midlands) a while back, and these
were definitely extensive for chemists in the early part of the
twentieth century - could repay investigation? This entry route
would also go some way to explaining how entrants gained stature,
experience and opportunities to develop their (independent) practice
too.
