Subject: Continued access to Zetoc assured for non-JISC subscribers to July
2009
Dear NLH CCDG members and SHA library leads for information
As most of you are aware, Claire Honeybourne had uncovered a situation
whereby ZETOC was not going to be available to 'Classic' Athens users
including NHS customers after 31 July 2008. However Claire and Ian and
others have worked behind the scenes, and now it has been confirmed that NHS
customers will continue to have access (current subscriptions permitting)
until 31 July 2009 . Allegedly, 240 Trusts have subscriptions! The message
below has been sent to existing customers.
Helen
"Continued access to Zetoc assured for non-JISC subscribers to July 2009"
JISC contracts Eduserv to provide Athens access management to JISC-funded
resources, including Mimas services such as Zetoc. This agreement terminates
on 31st July 2008. Access from 1st August 2008 is available directly via the
UK federation, but also via 'gateway' functionality of 'OpenAthens'
http://www.athensams.net/federations/federation_gateways) to institutions
contracting Eduserv to provide their access management. However, Mimas were
informed on 17th June 2008 that: "The NHS England contract for Athens
excludes access to the gateway functionality". This also applied to other
non-JISC subscribers to Zetoc.
As this information was not available when the (non-JISC) organisations
subscribed, Mimas have agreed a contingency measure with Eduserv and
licensed (non-Open) Athens for one further year for non-JISC organisations.
***Access will therefore continue unchanged until 31st July 2009***
Note that no further extension is likely, so access will not be possible
unless the gateway functionality is included in e.g. the NHS England
contract, or subscribing organisations license OpenAthens themselves.
Regards,
Jo Lampard
