Colin,

Students with visual or learning disabilities, including dyslexia are usually allowed at least one & a half times, if not twice, the time for exams as well. When I was at a further education college, we used to give them 3 months for normal one-month loan books (and that was before DDA!. Extra copies of the books were bought from a special fund for student support.

I imagine NHS Library resources are more limited but we do need to make some accommodation, and to be seen to be doing so. We at Tameside, haven't got a policy on this, but if you draw one up, I think it would make sense for all NHS libraries to adopt the same one, at least GM-wide.

Note also, that if a new member of staff has a special need, the dept of employment gives a grant towards equipment. In a sense, this is a new "special need", even if the staff member involved is not newly appointed. Your HR dept will be able to advise, but I would think this is an ideal time for you to get them to buy you some screen reading software or assistive technology, which would then be available for other customers as well... At least, get them to give you some funding to buy the books they are going to need! :-)
