GIS Consultant (Web Application Development
Location Newcastle / Edinburgh
Job Description
As a GIS Consultant, with a primary role in web application development,
you will have an excellent working knowledge and experience of software
engineering concepts (with particular experience in web applications)
across the full project life-cycle of requirements; design; build, test and
deployment. Suitable experience in ASP.NET in C# or VB.Net, and a strong
background in the development/use of web services, XML, SOA, AJAX,
JavaScript, HTML and CSS is required. A good understanding of the issues
around scalability, performance, reliability and accessibility of web
applications is also required, along with experience of load and stress
testing.
You will also be able to demonstrate an ability to grasp new concepts and
communicate them internally and externally to customers. An understanding
and experience of RDBMS technology (Oracle, SQL Server) and excellent
communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, are also
key to the role. The role will involve occasional working on customer
sites so a willingness to travel is essential.

Main Tasks
Software Development
• detailed design using UML and Use Cases
• experience in the RUP methodology
• application of agreed software engineering principles to deliver
the design
• development using C#, ASP .NET, web services, XML, JavaScript and
AJAX
• creating and implementing test plans
• unit and integration testing/load testing/stress testing
Systems Analysis and Design
• requirements analysis
• development of functional and non-functional specifications
• design of web applications with due consideration for scalability,
performance, reliability and accessibility
• data and process modelling
Consultancy services to new or existing clients
• advice on the capture of spatial information
• advice on the management of spatial information
• on site problem solving and software development
