Subject: Contemporary German Writing
Literaturport.de offers the following:
- Autorenlexikon: an authors' dictionary which features important
contemporary authors like Günter Grass, Judith Hermann, Karen Duve,
Elfriede Jelinek, or Ingo Schulze right next to writers yet to be
discovered. What distinguishes this dictionary from others is that each
author has written his or her entry herself. This way, the information
is reliable - apart from the fact that it may be interesting to examine
how these different writers present themselves.
- Autorentöne: a collection of cost-free literary audio samples. New
books are being introduced acoustically - an extract is read out which
allows readers to get an impression of style and content of the book.
Many of the samples were read out by the author him- or herself. These
audio samples allow readers abroad to follow current literary tendencies
in German literature, and to discover new interesting fiction.
Especially translators are enthusiastic users of this rubric.
- Literatouren: well-known German writers show their personal outlook on
the German capital, Berlin. Each writer has produced a text describing
his or her personal routes, recommendations and memories about Berlin,
photos give an impression of the sites they recommend. Tourists can get
insiders' tips for going out in Berlin, and everyone interested in the
city can get a unique insight here. This particular service was so
successful in Germany that it will soon be available for other German
cities and regions as well.
Apart from these rubrics, Literaturport.de features many more services,
for example a calender of literary competitions, personal book
recommendations, regional literary histories, and so on. All services
are cost-free, since the website is primarily designed as a nonprofit
platform for German-speaking authors. It was recently awarded the
Grimme Online Award, the most important online award in Germany.
It would be great if Literaturport.de proved helpful to you, and if you
considered it as a recommendation for your colleagues and students.
Sincerely yours,
Sonja Müller
