IFM-GEOMAR - Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences and the
Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel are offering
three petrology/geochemistry positions
within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB 574), "Volatiles and fluids
in subduction zones: Climate feedback and trigger mechanisms for natural
hazards".
The SFB 574 investigates the pathways and fluxes of fluids and volatile
components (such as C, S, halogens and H2O) through the entire subduction
system (with present focus site in Central Chile) in order to evaluate the
processes that control subduction recycling, the effects of these volatiles
on climate, the influence on the geochemical evolution of the hydrosphere
and atmosphere, and the causes of some of subduction-related natural hazards.
The salary of all positions (50% part-time) is according to the class 13
TV-L of the German tariffs for public employees. Candidates should either
hold a bachelors and/or diploma (masters) degree in an appropriate subject,
e.g. geology, geochemistry, volcanology, petrology or mineralogy. Depending
on the sub-project, they will be expected to participate in cruises and
field work within the SFB research areas and to collaborate within an
interdisciplinary team and with international partners. Very good english
language proficiency (written and spoken) is essential.
We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals in the
following three petrology/geochemistry sub-projects:
C1-1 PhD metamorphic petrology/geochemistry (temporary: 1 Jan. 2009 - 31
Dec. 2011):
The position in the field-based petrology-geochemistry project will focus
on fluid-rock interactions in subduction zones (e.g.,
eclogite-blueschist-transformation). The PhD student will do petrological
and geochemical works (major and trace elements, halogens, radiogenic
isotopes) and combines the results with modelling techniques. Participation
in field work (Ecuador, Erzgebirge, Indonesia) is obligatory.
Contact: Prof. Volker Schenk (vs(at)min.uni-kiel.de). Keyword: SFB574-C01-1
Deadline for this position: November 2nd 2008
C1-2 PhD experimental petrology/geochemistry (temporary: 1 Jan. 2009 - 31
Dec. 2011):
The position in the experimentally based petrology-geochemistry project
will focus on the element contributions of the different lithological
components of the subducting slab (mantle, crust and sediments) to the
element budget released from the slab. Fluid-solid-melt element
partitioning behavior will be investigated by using state-of-the-art
experimental and analytical techniques. The experimentally based results
will be combined with modelling techniques.

SFB574-C01-2
Deadline for this position: November 2nd 2008
C2 - PhD igneous petrology/geochemistry (temporary: 1 Jan. 2009 - 31 Dec.
2011):
The PhD project is focused on the petrologic and geochemical
characterization of mafic volcanic rocks with the aim to understand the
dynamics of subduction-related magmatic systems at the Chilean Southern
Volcanic Zone in response to varying tectonic parameters. Assessment of
volcanic hazards of selected volcanic centers including Villarrica are an
important part of the project. Candidates should have a background in the
field of Earth Sciences, preferentially with a focus on igneous petrology
and/or geochemistry. Some experience in the preparation and analysis of
magmatic rocks and interpretation of geochemical/petrologic data (e.g.
major and trace elements, isotopic geochemistry) is essential;
Participation in field work in Chile and Argentina is obligatory; spanish
is desirable but not required.
Contact: Prof. Kaj Hoernle (khoernle(at)ifm-geomar.de). Keyword: SFB574-C02
Deadline for this position: applications will be considered until the
position is filled
The Christian-Albrechts-University and the Leibniz Institute of Marine
Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) are equal opportunity / affirmative action employers
and seek to increase the proportion of female scientists. Therefore women
are especially encouraged to apply.
We also support the employment of disabled persons. Persons with
disabilities will, with appropriate qualifications and aptitudes, be
employed preferentially.
Candidates are to submit their applications using the relevant keyword
including a current CV, short statement of research interests, and
reference contacts to:
