Hi Emma,
not sure what you are planning to do - maybe you can tell us first so
that we can provide better advise what to do in your case.
If you want to e.g. use the multi-subject tensor-ICA method
implemented in melodic then I guess you're much better off downloading
the latest version of FSL for the mac - it seems that you are more
comfortable with that particular platform so my advise would be to try
and make that work. If you don't have admin privileges the you can
simply install FSL in your home.
FSL within a VM is somewhat limited wrt memory etc, so even if you
can get it to work under VM somehow, melodic might not run reliably.
Linux works well in our experience but can be a bit of a pain to set
up iif e.g. libraries are missing...
