Hi Laura,
I am not going to employ my usual quibble about being a student with impairments or a disabled
student, One can actually be one and not the other either way round :)
I have rather different quibble, I'd like to help but there is very much the danger of my becoming a
professional interviewee as it were, having contributed to other pieces of research in the field of
disability studies before, therefore I am in great danger of leaving my "signature" all over the
place.
Actually I expect that is a danger all of us face as researchers when we use opportunity samples of
people who agree to be interviewed, mind you one can only use people who agree, unless one is using
secondary sources.
No actually I am not sure if I even qualify as a University Graduate, being as I skipped a couple of
stages and to date I only have the equivalent of half a Masters :)
Other than that I am not technically in the labour (possibly soon to become Tory) market. (Couldn't
resist that pun) since I am one of those IB scroungers the Government seems so keen to exclude from
real opportunity.
In a way I regard myself as in the labour market, because I am looking for the eventual outcome on
graduation, (if I am not thrown into some forced labour gulag before then) to be employment, yet I
am acutely aware of the difficulties that this presents me in reality, not so much because my
"impairment" itself renders me unemployable, but because of the construction of that impairment, and
also the changing nature of academia, that continues to make it hard for someone from the wrong side
of the tracks to have the social capital to sustain all the necessary hoop jumping that is necessary
in terms of additional qualifications required, not the sort that the government in its benefit
reforms will make it any easier to aquire.
It is like looking for a job as a manufacturer of smoked glasses for viewing solar eclipses,
somewhat unsustainable. (oh you can quote me on that if you like)
