Hi! My name is Rachel.
I was recently awarded my PhD (Social Policy) in Australia. My Doctorate
was entitled: "Footprints, Wheel Tracks and Stirrings of a Movement:
Positioning People with Disability and the Disability Rights Movement in
Australia". There were two main focus points to my research. Firstly, I
sought to establish and record the positioning of people with disability
in Australia - framing the stuggles of the disabled "other" through the
denial of citizenship, segregation within institutions, living on the
margins of society and the Disabled Body. Secondly, I completed an
initital critical analysis of the Disability Rights Movement in Australia
where I presented an explanation for the tensions inherent in the
Australian movement. This research established the positioning of people
with disability and many of the services/organisations which are designed
to support them/us, within modern thought, and suggested an alternative
post modern framework for considering/challenging/liberating/ celebrating
disability. I am currently actively seeking publication of this
research. The late A/Professor Christopher Newell (Australian disability
activist and academic) described my research as ground breaking work in
the Australian context.
OK - sorry, long winded explanation/introduction about what I have been
working on for the past few years...
Currently I am working as a Research Fellow with Monash University in
Melbourne, Australia. Monash is currently offering early career
researchers (such as myself) a scholarship to foster European
collaboration. At this stage, it looks like I would be free to travel
during the European summer period next year (so in approximately 12 months
time). Is anyone interested in speaking/emailing me regarding working
together? I am particularly interested in collaboration which would lead
to joint publications, and I would also welcome the opportunity to present
my work and, most significantly, to learn from my European counterparts -
I know that you have a lot to offer us here in Australia. In addition to
my doctoral work, I am currently researching in the areas of down syndrome
and alzheimer's disease, as well as the issue of informed consent for
research with people with intellectual disability.
If anyone is interested in forming a partnership for a few weeks or even a
couple of months, next year - please let me know. I need to apply to my
Uni for funds (which will cover my airfares, accommodation, and wages) by
early August.
Thank you for taking your time to read my email:) I hope you all have a
lovely week!
