POSITION TITLE: Senior Metadata Librarian
This position will be the champion for managing the treatment content in a
major new online search application. The individual will be responsible
for creating a comprehensive metadata strategy which will include
acquisition, quality handling and enhancement (e.g. normalization, entity
extraction, taxonomy mapping, etc.). The position will play a significant
role in designing and developing a new line of products and services as
well as related administrative applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understand the objectives and end-user needs of the search product
- Develop a metadata strategy to guide the design of procedures in
acquisition and ingest of content as well as to guide software development
of the search application
- Provide direction on the selection, application and maintenance of
controlled vocabularies and authority files
- Envision, design, articulate and oversee development of methods for
managing content and metadata (from a variety of sources and in disparate
formats) in order to enable optimal search, recall, refinement and
navigation
- Create a data dictionary defining the purpose and treatment of metadata,
to serve as a guide and a record, including details about format,
application, conformance to any controlled vocabulary or authority file,
intended relative weighting for informing search relevance, etc.
- Participate in product development team throughout development and
consult closely with software development staff to convey requirements,
understand and work within technical constraints, and optimize the
effectiveness of design implementations
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with content
suppliers and partners
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 7+ years experience in content management, working with online
publishing of content or as a metadata librarian
- Experience working with published content in relation to search
applications
- Familiarity with web applications, search technologies and the software
development process
- Experience working with metadata structures (XML, DC, MARC, RDF, etc.)
- Familiarity with entity extraction and auto categorization technologies
helpful
- Ability to work in a start-up environment with a skeleton staff
initially and very ambitious goals
- Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and thrive in a
fast-paced, multi-tasking cross-functional team environment while
maintaining excellent working relationships with people in a wide variety
of functional areas
- High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills as
well as basic technical writing skills
- Knowledge of libraries, library content, library industry standards, and
library information retrieval systems helpful
- Masters degree in library or information science required
- Ability to travel 10%
LOCATION: The position is in Ann Arbor MI but relocation is not
necessarily required.
