i think for most poets engaged in anything resembling spam-lit, it's a passing fancy, an easy buzz, a one half off.
there will be a few people, though, who do it seriously.
look at william s. burroughs and the cut-up. there were all sorts of people engaged in similar things. but burroughs took it beyond anything anyone else was doing in a similar vein. not only in the work itself--especially in his trilogy the soft machine, nova express, and the ticket that exploded--but also in his poetics, his writing about writing and art. he created a whole world view in which the cut and the cut-up were important.
mind you, there weren't as many doing related things as there are now people engaged in one form or another of spam-lit. it's just so easy to attain hyper-production of drivel now. i wonder if anyone can stand out in such an environment.
