I interviewed Michael fairly extensively for the "Celebrating Memory"
project, and he discussed this vividly. The recordings and transcripts
are in the National Sound Archive, and Michael himself will have a set.
Indeed, Michael would be a good and generous source in person if Len
were interested in going in that direction.
If he is armed with a recording device while doing this research, it
could add substantially to the history of archives and archiving. Much
that has been done in archives, and the contexts, reasons, and
consequences, exist in the archivists, conservators and officials
involved. And researchers and supporters as well, who sometimes have
vital parts of a story.

As many of you will know this ended up with a solution that left crew-lists and agreements distributed between TNA, the National Maritime Museum, local repositories and the Memorial University, Newfoundland. This caused controversy at the time (and since). One of the factors was that the records were offered to repositories covering the ports of registration, but many declined to accept them due to lack of space/resources. Some may recall that Michael Willis-Fear was vocal in the campaign to preserve the records in the UK.

If anyone can help him or has any personal memories of the process they want to share, Len can be contacted at <[log in to unmask]>.
