I wonder if someone can help a contact of mine, Len Barnett, a maritime reseacher?
He's writing a paper about the dispersal of the records of the Registrar-General of Seamen and Shipping that took place in the 1970s (or the '80s). As many of you will know this ended up with a solution that left crew-lists and agreements distributed between TNA, the National Maritime Museum, local repositories and the Memorial University, Newfoundland. This caused controversy at the time (and since). One of the factors was that the records were offered to repositories covering the ports of registration, but many declined to accept them due to lack of space/resources. Some may recall that Michael Willis-Fear was vocal in the campaign to preserve the records in the UK.
Len has done work on the records of the MCA, NMM and TNA, but I suggested that local reppositories (both those who accepted and those who declined records) may have information on the dispersal process in their own records. If anyone can help him or has any personal memories of the process they want to share, Len can be contacted at <[log in to unmask]>.
