Temporary move of some of the National Library of Scotland's manuscript
collections
The National Library of Scotland is working to upgrade visitor facilities
at its George IV Building. In order to protect the collections while
building work is carried out, some of the manuscript collections will be
temporarily transferred to secure storage at one of the Library's other
sites. Work will begin in August 2008 and is expected to continue until
April 2009.
All items which are in temporary storage will be made available as usual
to readers in the Manuscripts Reading Room in the George IV Bridge
building. Delivery of these items will take longer than usual and some
items may be temporarily unavailable for short periods while in transit
between buildings.
We recommend that manuscript readers contact us in advance of their visit
to the Library, so that we can advise on availability of specific items
and arrange pre-orders. The manuscripts which will be moved are
accessions with reference numbers from Acc.11690 onwards. Delivery of
items from the John Murray Archive may also be subject to some delays. We
may not always be able to deliver items on the same day on which they are
ordered, so we recommend that readers pre-order items.
We will do everything possible to ensure that disruption is kept to a
minimum, and we thank readers in advance for their patience and co-
operation.
