The Central Science Laboratory seeks an experienced Senior Statistician /
Deputy Team Leader to provide statistical expertise to projects on ecology,
applied biology and food science. The role requires aptitude for leadership
and management, initiative in opening up new opportunities and funding,
development of innovative applications and strong communication skills. In
addition to your statistical work, you will assist the team leader in the
day-to-day running of the team. You will also take responsibility for
developing one or more areas of applied statistics through research
proposals, developing opportunities with customers, collaboration with
universities and applied research. There are a number of exciting

The design and assessment of sampling and measurement methodologies for
monitoring / surveillance and emergency response is an expanding area of
work where the team has an international profile.

A degree, or equivalent qualification, in statistics/mathematics/science
subject with a strong statistics/mathematics component and a postgraduate
degree (MSc, Diploma or PhD) in statistics is required. Candidates without
these will need to demonstrate equivalent competence in applied statistics.
You will have demonstrable experience of statistical consultancy, preferably
in agricultural, ecological, food or applied biological research, with the
ability to communicate statistical ideas to non-statisticians and to
understand the scientific principles behind experimental data. You will need
a high level of expertise in statistical packages – e.g. GenStat, R, or SPSS.
This is a permanent post at CSL Band 5, based in the Statistics and
Informatics Team (http://statistics.csl.gov.uk) at the Central Science
Laboratory (CSL – www.csl.gov.uk), in a rural setting near York, UK. The
salary range is UK£28,421 to £37,392 – negotiable depending on skills,
qualifications and experience.
