Coregistration is for aligning multiple images of the same subject.
Typically, there would be only one anatomical image for each subject, so
coregistration should not be needed.
If you are using SPM5, then you would ensure that the AC is close to the 0,0,0
mm coordinate. Then you would segment, in order to produce Jacobian scaled
("modulated") and spatially normalised grey matter images (mwc1*.img), which
you smooth by about 12mm and do stats on.
If you want to be a bit more adventurous, then you could try the DARTEL
toolbox (see http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/~john/misc/dartel_guide.pdf ) as
part of the VBM preprocessing. Evidence mostly seems to suggest that it
gives stronger results.
