The Economic and Social Research Council invites proposals for a Quantitative
Research Node within the application strand of the National Centre for e-
Social Science research programme.
The Node will develop a mix of advanced computational tools and techniques
which, in combination with quantitative data and quantitative (statistical and
econometric) methods, will support 21st century social science research. The
Node will build an e-Infrastructure to address the limitations of the ‘standard
model’ of quantitative research, in which a single researcher analyses a single
dataset using a standard statistical or econometric package such as SAS,
STATA or SPSS. Accordingly, the Node research programme will tackle three
issues: facilitating collaboration among investigators; enabling researchers to
handle very large datasets singly and in combination; and supporting the
modelling of complex data, including visualisation to assist model fitting. The
outcome will be a scaling-up of quantitative research, beyond what is possible
within the ‘standard model’, by enabling advanced modelling methods to be
combined with extensive data sources.
The overall budget for the Node is £1,060k at 100% fEC, spread over three
years, of which the ESRC will meet 80% (£850k).
There will be a single stage application process. Full proposals must be
submitted by 4pm on Monday 29th September 2008 through the Research
Councils' Joint electronic Submissions (Je-S) system. The ESRC's Quantitative
Node Commissioning Panel will consider the proposals in November 2008 and
recommendations for funding will go to the Research Resources Board for
approval in December 2008. Decisions will be announced shortly after.
