Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Department
of Probability and Statistics at the University of Sheffield. The position is
part of a large and innovative research project Managing Uncertainty in Complex
Models, involving researchers at four other universities in addition to
Sheffield (see http://mucm.group.shef.ac.uk). Candidates should have (or expect
soon to have) a PhD in Statistics or a related field. The post is available
from 29 September 2008 (although a later start date may be agreed if
appropriate) to 30 September 2010
The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Dr Jeremy
Oakley, on the development of case studies in Bayesian statistical analysis of
computer experiments. This will involve identifying and quantifying the various
sources of uncertainty in a computer model prediction, such as uncertainty in
model inputs and the discrepancy between the underlying mathematical model and
the physical process of interest. Where physical data are available, it will be
necessary to consider the problem of calibrating the model to the physical
observations. The case studies will be drawn from genuine applications of
computer modelling in either industry or academia, and the Research Associate
will be liaising with a relevant contact from the project advisory panel. The
computer models will be computationally expensive, and Gaussian process methods
will be required to reduce computation times. The Research Associate will also
have the opportunity to conduct more theoretical research into model
calibration.
Closing Date: 29th August, 2008
Salary: £26,665 - £33,780 per annum
