Dear all,
Having just returned from the XVIIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Seoul, I was heartened by the number of OSH practitioners there who saw themselves as a public health professional. It has been a major struggle over the years in getting the many disciplines involved in Occupational Health to recognise the role that each of us has and the benefits to be accrued from partnerships, alliances, and general multidisciplinary working. I know that Bashyr has been a great advocate of the community nature of Occupational Health for a long time; with a growing awareness of the global trend of work casualisation, such a stance becomes vital.
As well as driving away other disciplines, I suspect that unscrupulous use of the list is one of the reasons for our seeing fewer international contributions to the list. The international contribution is an important part of our sharing, especially in helping to gain a global perspective.
As a view, I am disappointed when I see an abuse of the list. We will not get rid of such people: they are impervious to notions of self-discipline or respect for others. Once again, however and for what it is worth, I would like to remind such people that the list is supported and run by JISCMAIL who are a part of the UK's higher education funding system; it is intended for all academics and practitioners concerned with advancing their practice and understanding of the health of people who work.

Or - like me - open a new e mail account specifically for the list. That way
you can look at what you want, whereever and whenever you want to.
