Hi everyone,
the NUS has recently released a report that discusses the problems faced by some
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) university applicants. In cases
where students are estranged from their parents there is a lengthy and
complicated process to decide what support they are entitled to. Not only can
this process be distressing to applicants but it often results in the minimum
amount of support being awarded, causing greater financial hardship.
An early days motion has been laid down by the labour MP for Llanelli, Nia
Griffiths, for the recommendations of the report to be implemented. There is a
facebook group with a link to the report and a model letter that urges MPs to
sign the EDM (search for "Fair Access for Estranged LGBT Students"). If anyone
can't access the report I can download it and send it off-list as an attachment
(email me at [log in to unmask]).
This is a really important report, I hope you feel that you can lend your
support to the EDM by lobbying your MP.
Thanks!
Sarah
