Dear All,
I would strongly argue that, far from cutting out the EIGG aspect, geo-engineering
requires every bit of Environmental and Industrial Geophysics, and the parliamentary
committee needs to be reminded of this. The mirrors and the sulphur mentioned
in my previous email are made from geological resources, and they have to be
launched from platforms built on the ground. The "before" and "after" environmental
measurements have to be made, at all the appropriate scales. It so happens that
the examples in the WIKIPEDIA extract quoted are not ground based, but there
are other conceivable geo-engineering projects that might be. For instance,
schemes to prevent permafrost or glacier melt would need detailed in-situ
monitoring. Carbon capture and storage is another form of geo-engineering
where all kinds of geophysical techniques from the oil and construction
industries would be required.
Contributions welcome, as ever, although I am striving to keep a "BGA"
response away from the areas likely to be covered by expected separate "EIGG"
and GeolSoc Engineering Group or Ground Forum responses.
Regards,
Sheila.
