James,
Saskia Vermeylen (Lancs) has written some papers on the commodification of the hoodia, equity issues around benefit sharing, IPRs of traditional knowledge.

Many thanks Dan,
I have been learning about all the 'foods' in Zimbabwe and southern Africa. From one perspective I am bothered in terms of not only intellectual property rights but also because of the direct nutritional deprivation this will have on the thousands of kids that rely on the food value and the enjoyment for about two months every years. I am I suppose hoping to link through to and NGO or campaigning organisation interested in putting a stop to such commoditisation. Is it too late? Other examples, Gonimbrasia belina (mopane worms) have resulted in major destruction of the mopane trees (Colophospermum mopane). I suppose this is in Vandana Shiva's campaigning territory.

An obvious similar 'super product' would be the so-called 'diet cactus' - Hoodia Gordonii.
I know Steven Robbins has published something on Hoodia and the Khoe-San in southern Africa with regards to intellectual property rights etc - but can't remember the title of the piece just now. There was a BBC documentary about it a while back as well. There are several bits in anthropological literature around rights and resources that may be of interest depending on what aspect of this it is you are interested in.

Does anyone have any examples of this type of thing going on? Papers published? Articles? Research? That sort of thing?
Many thanks
Nick
