To Briony:
Following my last e-mail on this subject, I'm attaching a couple of
images of the "wheelchair" in our collections. It's part of the
Department for Work and Pensions Collection that is held at the People's
History Museum. It is badged on the reverse "Allen & Hanburys Ltd
London" (I remember their pastilles for sore throats!), is principally
made of wood and has a padded back and seat. The wheels are metal spoked
with "Hughes Jointless Cushion" solid rubber tyres. The arms on each
side have a pre-drilled hole at the ends; maybe this was a to insert a
bar through for the seated occupant to hold on to and to act as a
restraint. Unfortunately there appears to be a footrest bar missing. It
dates from approximately 1940 and was used during World War Two to wheel
to safety disabled Labour Exchange staff following an air-raid alarm
sounding. We included it in an exhibition about Occupational Health at
the museum in 2005. Its accession number is NMLH.2001.20.395.
Best wishes
Jim Garretts, Keeper, the People's History Museum.
With kind regards
Jim Garretts, Keeper, the People's History Museum.

Please note the museum galleries at the Pump House are now closed for a multi-million pound expansion project. They will re-open in late 2009.
