Message from the MIST mailing list.
Dear all
A few notices for your consideration:
1) As you are no doubt aware there has been a call for nominations to
STFC's advisory committees and peer review panels
(http://www.scitech.ac.uk/About/Strat/Council/ComNoms08.aspx)
The closing date for submitting nominations is 15th June 2008 and as
such is fast approaching.
Most notably there are positions available on Science Board. I would
like to strongly encourage senior colleagues in the MIST community to
consider putting their name forward as it is clearly important that we
improve representation within STFC. The more different nominations the
better. It is a dirty job but somebody has to do it...
Other committees of interest to our community are
the Projects Peer Review Panel
(http://www.scitech.ac.uk/About/Strat/Council/AdCom/pprp/contents.aspx)
and the Education, Training and Careers Committee
(http://www.scitech.ac.uk/About/Strat/Council/ETCC_and_Fellpnl.aspx)
2) At the MIST business meeting at NAM it was suggested that MIST
council issue regular reminders to the community about promoting their
recent work to the wider public. It is clearly important that we
publicise our science in order to help make the case for our continued
funding. Most (if not all) universities have press offices that are
always willing to help promote work as it provides positive light on
their own institution. Within the MIST community we also have a number
of colleagues who have taken courses in media engagement who might be
willing to help craft press releases and provide additional links to
media contacts.
Also remember that the sunearthplan.net website is available for
highlighting your work to a lay audience. We are also happy to host
copies of press resleases (or links to them) on the MIST website.
Speaking of which, the MIST web pages are undergoing a revamp based on
comments received from the community. They should go live very soon.
3)Finally, it is anticipated that the reports from the ad hoc panels
following the short STFC consulation exercise will be released this
week. Science Board is now writing up its recommendations for STFC
council and the final decision regarding the outcome of the programmatic
review will be announced in July.
