Nothing for months and then 2 come along at once...
This is probably not news to people more actively involved in mining history
than I am (i.e. most of you) but recently at the IHR here in London two
people from Cornwall Record Office (Alison Spence and Eliie Tout) attended a
workshop on map sources to assist them with handling Mining Record Office
abandonment plans for the hard rock mines in Cornwall. There are 3,600 of
these which have recently been digitally photographed by the Coal Authority.
They are looking into ways of making these more accessible and also looking
into how to tie these underground maps in with GIS... [that will be fun!]
in line with the records of the Historic Environment section of the County
Council.
In the long term they are looking to tie these in with other documentary
sources relating to the individual mines e.g. Stannary records.
It may come as no surprise to you that they are experiencing problems with
determining the exact geographical locations to which some of the maps
pertain - they say this cannot be readily determined by
non-mining-specialists
