3. Journal of Media Practice Symposium – Leeds (20 June 2008)
The Journal of Media Practice held its annual symposium in Leeds this year with the theme of
‘Media Practice and its Field: the relationship with professional practice, teaching and research’.
Organised by Ian Macdonald, and the Institute of Communications Studies, the day offered both a
rich overview of where we are as an emerging discipline, and ample illustration of the diverse ways
in which practice is being explored through presentations of practice pedagogy and research
within the field. A more detailed report to follow.

4. Journal of Media Practice – free copies available to MeCCSA members.
Attention MeCCSA Members Teaching Practice or involved in Practice Research.

several copies available for distribution. So could you let us know if you would like one of these

5. Event and Calls for Papers

•	MeCCSA 2009 Annual Conference – Call for Papers (Deadline 19 Sept 2008)

[Note from the editor: a great deal of practice was evident at this year’s MeCCSA conference
which was held in Cardiff, and next year’s event at Bradford looks equally welcoming to practice
so don’t be shy – submit your practice presentations / posters / panel sessions – and have your
work screened at the National Media Museum]

MeCCSA is the UK subject association for those teaching and researching in
Media, Communication and Cultural Studies. The organisation holds its next
conference from 14-16 January 2009, hosted by the School of Informatics,
University of Bradford and held at The National Media Museum
(http://www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk). It includes a reception and
conference dinner at the museum in central Bradford.

We are inviting papers, presentations of practice, posters and panels across
the range of interests represented by the Association and its networks (see
http://www.MeCCSA.org.uk). Some sessions we hope will weave together 'practice'
and 'research' focused papers, and there will be separate screenings in full
of material referred to in these. Proposals for papers and panels are
welcome in all areas of media, communication and cultural studies. As MeCCSA
joined with AMPE (the Association of Media Practitioners in Education) in
2006 practice-based proposals are also very welcome.

CONFIRMED PLENARY SPEAKERS
- Laura Mulvey (Birkbeck University of London)
- Diane Negra (University of East Anglia)
- Shaun Moores (University of Sunderland)
- Dominique Pasquier (EHESS, Paris).

POSTER COMPETITION
There will be a poster competition with a prize of £100, to be judged by
members of the MeCCSA Executive Committee. The academic poster is highly
valued by MeCCSA as an indicator of current research and there will be a
good space set aside at the 2009 conference for this activity.

For a definition of a poster see here: http://tinyurl.com/5buprz

An online tutorial on how to design a poster is available
here: http://tinyurl.com/6xn9om

COMPETITION FOR BEST PAPER
The Art Design Media - Higher Education Academy Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) are
also offering a £500 prize, and publication, for the best paper analysing
key issues impacting on media, communications and cultural studies in higher
education. Submission details are as for other papers, etc. below.

Abstracts of papers, presentations of practice and posters, no longer than
250 words, should be sent to [log in to unmask] by 19 September in order
for peer review to take place.

For panels, let us have a short description and rationale for the whole (200
words), abstracts for each of the papers (250 words each) and the name of
the person chairing. For practice proposals make sure you send DVD or VHS

•	Journal of Media Practice - Call for Papers (Deadline 17 Oct 2008)
SPECIAL ISSUE: A Decade of Media Practice: Changes, Challenges and Choices
The Journal of Media Practice is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2009! To mark this
anniversary, the Journal is looking for contributions from colleagues involved in media practice
around the world, whether as teachers or practitioners.

The current decade is witnessing vast changes in the production, consumption and forms of
media. With digital technology, video art, documentary, film and other visual media are all going
through interesting changes at the institutional, artistic and audience levels. Web 2.0 is blurring
the lines between the production and consumption of media, and is opening up new spaces of
expression in societies where state censorship hinders freedom of speech in traditional media. It
is also instigating changes in web design. Satellite television is consolidating itself as the primary
medium in places like the Middle East. Digital radio is opening up new possibilities for
broadcasting. More synergies are being created between different media forms, whether between
the Internet and television, the Internet and documentary, or any number of other possibilities.

The Journal invites international contributions responding to the changes and challenges in the
media practice landscape over the last decade, be it television, radio, video art, documentary, film,
screenwriting, the internet, the press, or any other form of print, audio, visual or audiovisual
media, and the choices that those changes and challenges have created for media practitioners,
institutions and audiences.

In addition to academic articles, the Journal encourages the submission of:

- Interviews with key media personnel and artists
- Reflections by media practitioners on their own practice (whether within institutions or as
independent practitioners)
- Reviews of exhibitions and other media events
- Critical pieces about changes in technology, content and delivery of media products and tools,
or the work of media institutions around the world

Articles should be 5000 words, reviews 500-1000 words, and critical pieces and reflections
between 1000-3000 words. The Editor is happy to discuss other possibilities with potential
contributors.

All submissions are subject to peer review. The deadline to receive all material is October 17,
2008. Please send all submissions to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

•	ScreenWork Volume II – the DVD for practice based research in screen media. http://
www.bris.ac.uk/drama/screenwork/

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Following the launch of ScreenWork Vol.1 with the Journal of Media Practice (8.2) last year we are
pleased to announce the call for submissions to the second volume. This edition of ScreenWork
will be dedicated to publishing the work of practice-based PhD students in screen media in
association with the AVPhD network. Submissions can come from recently completed doctorates,
or post MPhil upgrade students, from anywhere in the world.

ScreenWork publishes practice-based work that produces new knowledge in Communication,
Media and Cultural Studies, Art and Design, Visual Anthropology, Performing Arts and related
fields. We are seeking moving image work on film, video and new media platforms. Where
submissions are documentation of interactive or installation work we encourage producers to
consider the problems of documentation as part of the research process. We want to showcase as
many pieces of high quality doctorial research as we can so it approx. 30 minutes will probably be
our maximum run time for each piece of work. We will consider extracting if the research case is
made by the producer.

Submissions will be subject to a process of open peer review. Reviewers will be selected from the
ScreenWork editorial board representing scholar practitioners working across the field of screen
media both in the UK and internationally. All submissions should include a research statement
(1500 word max) – statements, peer reviews and video extracts will all be published on the
ScreenWork website.

Edited by Jon Dovey, with Charlotte Crofts as Associate Editor, ScreenWork will be peer reviewed
and published in association with the Journal of Media Practice by Intellect Books. It will be
distributed free to subscribers to the Journal of Media Practice and also available for purchase by
libraries and individuals. We are aiming to produce the DVD for early December 2008 to coincide
with the publication of the AVPhD edition of Journal of Media Practice and the exhibition of AVPhD
work at the P3 Gallery at the University of Westminster.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Works should be submitted on DVD. Support statements should be submitted by email in Word or
PDF. Deadline for consideration for Vol. 2 will be Mon Sep 1st 2008. Submissions should be sent
to Professor Jon Dovey Editor ScreenWork Dept of Culture Media and Drama, University of the West
of England, St Matthias Campus, Oldbury Court Road, Fishponds, Bristol BS16 2JP. FFI Jon Dovey
jonathan.dovey ‘at’uwe.ac.uk.

Work should be accompanied by a statement up to 1500 words which states the research
questions, methods and outcomes of the project. This statement should also explain the criteria
by which the piece should be assessed as research. Statements and reviews will all be published
on the ScreenWork website (with authors’ permission.) You are strongly advised to visit the
ScreenWork site for examples of work and research statements.

ScreenWork does not offer fees for the publication of work. All work published should be
copyright cleared and will have to indemnify the editors and publishers against third party claims
etc.
