Dear Leila, dear lis-linkers,
There has been increased interest in Open Source LMS packages -
clearly a result of developments in the LMS market over recent years:
mergers and acquisitions of LMS vendors and the growing involvement of
private equity companies worry many colleagues. The LMS is a major
commitment for any library, and you don't want your chosen product to
be bought up by a competing vendor next year, only to be discontinued
a year after.
A number of libraries world-wide have, therefore, invested in
developing Open Source alternatives. One of them is the new CAMLIS
library at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital. We opted for Koha
as it was well established already in public, academic and special
libraries worldwide, it met our (demanding) spec at much lower cost
than a proprietary system, and it will allow us to have additional
functionality developed as we need it. Although the version we
implemented is now only in Beta, and not all modules have been
implemented yet, we are impressed with what it delivers, and are happy
to show it to colleagues!

Hello,
Can anybody suggest good open source cataloguing software?
The Library to be catalogued is new, independent from a wider
organisation (it has nothing to do with the London College of
Communication), specialised in subject and will have up to 5,000 books
and journals. It is hoped it will be useful to researchers and students.
As such, the records should be compatible with standards and protocols
such as Z39.50 and MARC21, and the catalogue should also be
publishable via the web.
I have come across a few names such as Koha and BiblioteQ but have no
idea if these are good or if there are other better ones out there.
Any advice very gratefully received.
With many thanks,
Leila Kassir
