Eton College Library
Project Cataloguer (19th- and 20th-Century Rare Books) two years fixed term
College Library houses over 150,000 rare books and manuscripts, which range in date from the tenth century to the twenty-first. The 19th- and 20th-century collections cover a wide range of subjects, among which English literature, travel, theatre history and private presses are particularly well represented. The library's collections are used for research by visiting scholars and for teaching students from Eton and elsewhere.
In autumn 2008 a position will become available for a cataloguer of post-1800 printed materials, who will create original catalogue records using UK and international standards for rare book cataloguing. Other responsibilities will include assisting with prioritising items for conservation and with the arrangement of post-1800 materials.
Candidates must have a library qualification or practical cataloguing experience. Hours are 35 per week and holidays 4 weeks per year (plus bank holidays). This post would suit a newly qualified librarian, someone currently pursuing a professional library qualification, or a cataloguer seeking experience in the rare books sector.
