I'm also interest in whether there are downsides in doing this? e.g.
does it downgrade the user experience (perhaps with extra clicks) or
similar. I don't want to go down the road of us implementing this and
finding out we've made things worse for users.
Also unclear on what attributes are required?

A Jisc funded early implementation of shib/metalib. This is very useful.
It has a technical report which refers to the attibute
'HTTP_SHIB_ORGPERSON_UID', this is obviously not one of the normal
attributes, but I wonder if this is due to the work being done several
years a go, and today we can use something like eduPersonTargetedID
