> The course is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust as part of its programme
> to support research into the ethics of biomedical science and
> healthcare.

> The aims of the Summer School are to:

> * Explore the ethical and social issues that arise from our use of
> animals in society, including the implications of advances in
> biomedical science (such as xenotransplantation, the creation of
> interspecies embryos and transgenic technologies) for what
> distinguishes humans and animals; the ethics of using animals in
> biomedical research; the intersections of animal and environmental
> ethics; and our many uses of animals in society more broadly;
> * Expand awareness of the variety of research methods that can be
> employed in biomedical ethics research;
> * Stimulate and provide practical advice on grant applications to
> the Biomedical Ethics funding programme;
> * Highlight excellence in and explore the application of
> biomedical ethics research.

> Who is the course designed for?
>
> Applications are invited from researchers in disciplines relevant to
> biomedical ethics, including (though not restricted to) the following:
> philosophy, social sciences, law, political sciences and theology.
> Applications are also invited from established researchers in the
> biomedical sciences who wish to move into the field of biomedical
> ethics.
>
> Priority will be given to junior researchers (ie PhDs, new postdocs),
> and to applications from those based in the UK or Republic of Ireland,
> but we will also consider applications from developing countries.
>
> What will the course cover?
>
> The School will involve a mixture of plenary and breakout sessions.
>
> The plenaries will address key issues around our use of animals in
> society, including:
> * The boundaries between animals and humans;
> * The grounds for ethical constraint in research on animals;
> * The intersections of animal and environmental ethics; and
> * Our use of animals as food and companions.
>
>
> In addition, there will be sessions on the Wellcome Trust Biomedical
> Ethics grants programme, facilitated discussion around doing research
> in biomedical ethics, a grants workshop (looking at what makes a good
> grant application and how to get funded), and an opportunity to get
> personal advice on specific project ideas.

> Up to 30 successful applicants will have their travel costs,
> subsistence and accommodation covered.
