We have just heard the sad news of the death of our colleague and friend
Christopher Newell. The Reverend Canon Dr Christopher Newell AM,
Associate Professor, and member of the Order of Australia will be known
to many in the global disability community. As well as being an Anglican
priest he was a leading bioethicist, and associate professor at the
University of Tasmania's Medical School, and joked how he sometimes gave
lectures from his hospital bed. He was a prolific writer, activist,
networker, self-proclaimed stirrer, and member of many boards across
Australia. In April he had been a delegate to Prime Minister Kevin
Rudd's 2020 Summit. He was also a regular visitor to New Zealand. But
mostly he will be remembered for his generosity, his energy, and for
inspiring, nurturing and entertaining many of us working or studying in
disability issues, social justice or advocacy. His 'Disability in
Australia: exposing a social apartheid' co-written with Gerard Goggin
(University of New South Wales Press, 2005) is a benchmark on disability
rights. Our thoughts are with his family in Hobart.
