and a vibrant arts culture

- A few kilometres from Britain's most popular National Park

- With a great programme of social activity alongside the
academic business, including a closing banquet and chance to let
your hair down to a traditional country dance band at
Sheffield's Cutlers' Hall, home of the Company of Cutlers in
Hallamshire, Sheffield's ancient craft guild for the
metalworking industries.

So please book your place today and look forward to some English
midsummer weather.

This year we have paid special attention to refereeing and the
quality of papers to be presented, the conference will be
smaller in scale based in a single site at Sheffield Hallam
University with a high quality lecture theatre, social space and
presentation rooms all under one roof. The city centre, hotels
and the main rail station are right outside the venue.

You can find out more about the conference and how to take part
at http://drs2008.designinquiry.wikispaces.net/

Don't forget that there is a full set of information about air

PROMOTING WORLD CLASS DESIGN RESEARCH

The Design Research Society is inviting individual researchers
and institutions to participate in an exciting opportunity to
promote the most excellent design research and institutions
worldwide.

The DRS are supporting and co-ordinating the production of a
prospectus promoting the best of international design research.
The purpose of the brochure will principally be to raise
awareness of design research and the world class institutions
that are engaged in such activity.

This high quality, full colour brochure will contain ten to
twelve carefully selected case studies submitted by
institutions, providing an overview of key design research
taking place throughout the world. It will be designed for
distribution to government and funding bodies and other
influential institutions and individuals in the countries of
participating Design Schools. One major target will be companies
and industry bodies and we hope that the research projects
selected will be relevant to these organisations.

We have been very fortunate to secure some support from Coventry
University in the UK, who are donating the design of the
brochure and help with distribution in the UK. Many thanks to
Mike Tovey and Cherie Lebbon for this vital contribution. DRS
Council have already seen and approved the outline design for
the publication.

The content of the publication will include an introduction by
an eminent academic, case studies showcasing high quality design
research and a description of the work of the Design Research
Society and its Special Interest Groups.

This opportunity is open to researchers who are members of DRS.
We are now asking institutions to consider submitting a case
study (approximately 400 words and two images) for publication
and if selected, participating institutions will pay an amount
to cover the cost of printing and provide them with up to 250
copies for their own distribution. At the moment the cost for
such an entry in the brochure is likely to be GBP370 but this
may vary somewhat when we know the exact print run. UK
participants will pay a little more to cover the cost of
distribution in the UK. Participants outside the UK will have to
pay their own distribution costs.

The final case studies will be selected by a panel during July,
to ensure we are presenting the highest quality research that
reflects the worldwide distribution of our members. Publication
is planned for Autumn 2008.

Those interested in participating should contact Dr Philippa
Ashton at [log in to unmask] You will be sent a copy of
the proposed design, criteria for selection, example copy which
you can use to guide to producing your own entry and full
details about participation.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 1st July.

INCORPORATING EVALUATION METHODS IN CREATIVE WORK

19 January 2008: Lansdown Symposium - Incorporating Evaluation
Methods in Creative Work

CFP This call for abstracts is open now (closes 31 July 2008).

This is a CAS-supported event, so submissions from CAS members
would be particularly welcome.

Completing the Circle: Incorporating Evaluation Methods in
Creative Work

A one-day symposium in January 2009 organised by the Lansdown
Centre for Electronic Arts Middlesex University, London, UK

This is a one-day symposium supported by the Computer Arts
Society and the Design Research Society. Papers will focus on
the use of novel methods, or methods newly borrowed from other
disciplines, in evaluating the user's or audience's response to
media such as websites, portable media (such as iPods, PSPs),
pervasive games, film, videogames, technology-rich performance,
interactive art.

An aspect of interest is the use of interactive technologies to
assist evaluative processes as well as to deliver interactive
experiences. The aim is to share knowledge about evaluation
methods and to debate the role and value of different forms of
evaluation in relation to the arts and media. With this in mind,
well-argued papers questioning the very idea of evaluation
(especially scientific evaluation methods) in the arts, will
also be accepted.

All papers will be peer-reviewed by an international panel. The
best papers will be expanded and edited for a special issue of
the journal Digital Creativity.

The Call for Papers -- Abstracts invited now

Researchers, artists, designers and others worldwide are invited
to respond to the following deliberately provocative statement:

"The days when artists, media-makers or designers could work
solely from personal conviction -- regardless of the reception
of their work -- are gone. The intelligent artist or designer is
now deeply interested in discovering the audience's or the
user's response, and keen to use the many techniques and
approaches now available for doing so."

Papers should focus on the use of novel methods, or methods
newly borrowed from other disciplines, in evaluating the user's
/ audience's response to media such as websites, portable media
(such as iPods, PSPs), pervasive games, film, videogames,
technology-rich performance, interactive art. An aspect of
interest is the use of interactive technologies to assist
evaluative processes as well as to deliver interactive
experiences.

Examples include:

- the use of eyetracking to study how people watch films

- using galvanic skin response to discover game-players' level
of arousal

- repertory grid technique to analyse players' preferences in
videogames

- building art-making machines in order to reflect on art
practice

The aim is to share knowledge about evaluation methods and to
debate the role and value of different forms of evaluation in
relation to the arts and media. With this in mind, well-argued
papers questioning the very idea of evaluation (especially
scientific evaluation methods) in the arts, are welcome.

Intending authors should send an abstract of less than 1,000
words.

The Call for Abstracts closes on 31 July 2008.

For details see:
http://www.cea.mdx.ac.uk/?location_id=59&item=31

This event is endorsed by the Design Research Society.

CALLS

2 September 2008: HCI and the Analysis, Design and Evaluation of
Services

INTRODUCTION
As well as becoming an ever more important part of local and
global economies; Services and Service Design are emerging,
crossing, and in some cases redefining disciplinary boundaries.
A number of papers are emerging in HCI venues that have
explicitly examined services. Service has emerged as a frequent
metaphor for a range of computing applications, both web based,
pervasive and ubiquitous; here researchers and practitioners
often talk of services instead of applications. In addition
Service-oriented architectures receive continued attention in
Computing but research is often divorced from issues of concern
to HCI.

In turn the user, value, and worth centred ethos of HCI of
existing and emerging approaches, and is making its way into
Service design approaches (for example the use of personas in
Parker and Heapy's Journey to the Interface).

Service definitions and Service design has often stressed the
intangible, activity and participatory nature of service acts.
Vargo and Lusch define Services as "the application of
specialized competences (knowledge and skills), through deeds,
processes, and performances for the benefit of another entity or
the entity itself." This definition stresses the activity based
nature of services. HCI has much to offer in this area, from the
foundation principles espoused by Gould and Lewis, through to
approaches that provide sophisticated analysis of tasks /
activities. In addition characterisation of Service such as
Service as experience, Service as journey, overlap with
experience oriented approaches that have emerged for analysing
and designing computing.

In turn many approaches to Service design either borrow, overlap
or complement HCI's design focus and academic rigour. For
example Parker and Heapy's use of prototypes, personas, and
measurement of the service experience. However, explicit links
between work on Service definition, Service Design and HCI are
limited. There has not been any great discussion on the
complements and possible tensions between the areas. The time
seems appropriate for a workshop on what HCI can give to Service
Design and what Service Design can give to HCI. This workshop
will undertake such an activity.

GOALS

The following are goals of the workshop:

- to bring together researchers and practitioners to inform both
research and practice into Service Design

- to explore in more depth the relationships between HCI (and
its manifestations such as Interaction Design, User experience)
and Service Design

- to bring together people in different disciplines to discuss
and address HCI issues in relation to Service Design; and
Service Design issues in relation to HCI;

- to explore the wider implications of Service Design.

- to start to build a community of people with interests in the
areas.

TOPIC RELEVANCE
The workshop relates to existing work and workshops on Services.
Outside of HCI several major research projects and programs are
undertaking research into Services in relation to products (e.g.
KIM, IPAS, S4T). A recent AHRC network on service design has
also been undertaken at Oxford.

The workshop also builds on the work that has attempted to look
at Services issues in public services; on existing general
interest in HCI; existing general interest in service design;
research into the definition of services; and emerging paradigms
for Services. In addition the emergence of design consultancies
focussed around services and the wider design and engineering
communities growing interest in the topic.

TOPICS
The workshop aims to include rather than exclude. Possible
(contradictory) topics include:

- Do HCI approaches shed new light on definitions of service?

- Reports of experiences applying HCI approaches (e.g. Personas)
to the design of services.

- Reports of experiences using Services Marketing (e.g.
Blueprinting) approaches in HCI contexts.

- Service Quality (e.g. SERVQUAL) in relation to Usability /
User Experience measures.

- Conflicts and complements between Service as Experience and
'harder' measures of Service quality.

- Adaptation of existing perspectives to the analysis and design
of Services (e.g., task analysis, Activity Theory, Distributed
Cognition)

- Why Services mean that existing perspectives can no longer
apply.

- From Service to e-Service and back again.

- Educational perspectives.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE
Participants will be invited to submit a 4 - 6 page position
paper on their work, along with a candidate service for
additional activities. The morning session will be given over to
the presentation and discussion of these papers. The afternoon
session will be split between analysis / design of two service
examples using constructs explored in the morning. In addition
there will be a workshop site linked into the main conference
site that will remain active as a resource for the community.

PARTICIPANTS
Participants would be expected from industry and academia,
invites to those in the Service Design community would also be
made.

5-9 February 2009: ATMOSPHERE: Symposium Faculty of
Architecture, University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada

Abstract submission
Please send a 300 - 400 word abstract (must be in English) as a
PDF document by 1 July, 2008. Abstracts should be emailed to
[log in to unmask] - Include your name and institutional
affiliation if appropriate. Please do not include full
bibliographies, but include 3 main references and or sources to
allow your work to be placed or shifted into an appropriate
theme stream. Abstracts and full papers will be referred through
a double blind peer review process. Papers will be 3000 words
maximum for a 20 minute presentation. The referred papers will
be published in symposium proceedings.

ATMOSPHERE will be a yearly symposium in the Faculty of
Architecture, at University of Manitoba, to be held each
February. We encourage people from the disciplines represented
in the Faculty to submit abstracts and to attend, as well as
those outside of these traditional environmental design
disciplines.

Atmosphere is the consequence of the projects we make as
designers of landscapes, cities, architecture and interiors.
Atmosphere is hard to grasp, and even harder to talk about - yet
the production of atmosphere, intended or not, is one of our
most apparent contributions to the world. It is something that
lingers after the program has changed or the client has left.
Though palpable, atmosphere resists registration. So fragile and
dependent on the world around, atmosphere is also susceptible to
our individual perception. It is not something that can be read
or interpreted. It is.

ATMOSPHERE has been planned over a three-day period starting
with a Thursday evening registration and the main invited
lecture event. There will be two streams of speakers throughout
the next two days. Invited lecturers would be woven through
these streams. We hope that students across Canada and from the
Midwest in the United States will attend. The range of speakers
and topics will supplement students design education. This event
can possibly become a highlight of the winter term.

The output from ATMOSPHERE would be the event itself and the
Conference papers published yearly prior to the Symposium.
However, every five years we propose to collect the most
memorable papers and invite authors to expand or elaborate their
work to be included in a reader that would be published by an
international publishing house.

The intent of ATMOSPHERE is to also provide a venue for students
to hear, to meet participants with a perspective perhaps
different from what they are normally exposed to. The excitement
of such an event can also encourage students to submit their own
work to this or other symposiums/ conferences. We also hope that
the success of the event will help to further develop a sense of
pride and belonging to this Faculty.

ATMOSPHERE will provide a venue for local practitioners to see
more of what is going on in the Faculty and in the global
context that the speakers will be drawn from. We hope to attract
practitioners, academics and students nationally and
internationally as participants. This event will also provide a
window into what we do to other members of the University of
Manitoba community.

To submit abstract and further information, go to:

23-27 September 2008: Tweak 2008

Tweak 2008 is a new interactive art and live electronic music
festival taking place in Limerick City between the 23rd and 27th
of September 2008. Its aim is to promote understanding of the
use of technology within our culture and to explore contemporary
issues (social, aesthetic and functional). The festival will
consist of a 5-day exhibition, (interactive artworks, robots and
installations) comprising of artworks from international and
local artists.

Tweak examines the growing impact of digital technologies in the

creation of art and aesthetic experience. Providing a space for
Digital Artists to redefine the nature of technology within our
lives, the festival intends to create public awareness of the
complex nature of technology and explore the relationship
technology has to our lives.

Tweak invites architects, artists, designers, technologists,
engineers, urbanists, or teams thereof, to submit artistic
contributions for an exhibition that will critically explore new

roles, contexts and approaches for design in relation to the
social, cultural and ethical impact of existing and emerging
technologies.

1-5 September 2008: WORKSHOP Critical Issues in Interaction
Design

At HCI 2008: Culture, Creativity, Interaction Liverpool, John
Moores University, UK

Submission Deadline: Thursday, July 24, 2008

Computing technology is now so pervasive that the study of Human
Computer Interaction (HCI) is almost the study of everyday life.
A consensus has emerged in HCI that its historical concerns,
such as usability and efficiency, are no longer sufficient
scopes of inquiry. There have been turns to fun and enjoyment,
emotional design, experience design, culturally situated design,
critical and reflective design, beauty and aesthetics, and
technology for social action.

As HCI has become more implicated in culture, the field has
become concerned with critical theory. Critical theory is a
catch-all term that encompasses a number of writers and
disciplines; it includes the sub fields of hermeneutics,
phenomenology, semiotics, Marxism, feminism, deconstruction, and
postmodernism, among others. Critical theory has traditionally
aimed to help critics, understand, explicate, and evaluate dense
cultural phenomena, such as literature, film, social ritual, and
mass media.

Developing connections between critical theory and HCI is a
major undertaking that will likely require much work. This
workshop is designed to bring together some of the people
interested in doing it.

[Plans and Goals Of The Workshop]

This one day workshop will take the format of short
presentations in the morning followed by a group
design/evaluation activity in the afternoon.

The goals of the workshop are to:

- Provide a forum to discuss current interest in critical theory

- Identify the perspectives which are currently being used in
HCI and those which are neglected

- Discuss the ways in which critical theory can be made relevant
to design

- Consider problems of legitimating critical theory as a
relevant source for HCI

CALL FOR PAPERS Journal of Engineering Design
Special Issue on Inclusive Design

Guest Editors: John Clarkson, University of Cambridge, UK
[log in to unmask] Roger Coleman, Royal College of Art, UK
[log in to unmask]

By 2020, close to half the adult population of the UK will be
over 50 years old, while 20% of the inhabitants of the United
States and 25% of those of Japan will be over 65. With
increasing age, people change physically, mentally and
psychologically and for most these changes involve multiple,
minor impairments in eyesight, hearing, dexterity, mobility and
memory. Such changes can have a significant impact on older
people's independence due to an unnecessary mismatch between the
designed world and their changed capabilities.

Designers and design researchers around the world have responded
to this challenge with research initiatives described variously
as Universal Design, Transgenerational Design, Design for All,
Barrier-free Design and Inclusive Design. As a result much
progress has been made to ensure that products and services do
not unintentionally disadvantage less able users. A new
generation of researchers has emerged, in direct response to
increased research funding, and there is renewed interest from
business leaders and designers around the globe.

Fifteen years ago Roger Coleman and David Pullinger edited the
seminal special issue of the Applied Ergonomics Journal entitled
Designing for our Future Selves, with an overview on ageing
process, design strategies and evaluation methods. Much has
changed in the intervening years and it is time again to take
stock and present the best of recent research and practice in a
new special issue on Inclusive Design to be published by the
Journal of Engineering Design. You are invited to submit papers
on a range of topics that might include, but not be limited to:

- Overview papers describing national research initiatives

- Inclusive design strategies and outcomes

- Product and service evaluation methods

- Understanding users' capabilities, needs and expectations

- The design and delivery of exemplar products and services

- Future research needs

28-30 October 2008: Practice-led doctoral / post-doctoral
exhibition and symposium Chelsea College of Art and Design,
London

Research Narratives focuses on debates around practice-led
research by considering how practice is discussed, described or
addressed within a research context.

The symposium invites participants to exhibit their research.
The aim of this symposium is to foreground practical research
and map and reflect on ways in which researchers formulate their
work in the fields of art and design. Research Narratives is an
open call for practical work rather than papers, looking at
examples of research to generate, re-focus and re-direct its
discussion.

Research Narratives is an international symposium aimed at
doctoral, post-doctoral researchers and experienced
practitioners and researchers. Participants are asked to submit
a proposal to exhibit work considered as research. The proposal
should include documentation of the practical element of your
research alongside information such as: size, medium and any
requirements you have for exhibition. For performances or
time-based works, please include the duration of your work.

The submission should include a 100-300 word description of how
you intend to address your work as research and three keys words
describing your research interests. There are no costs available
to transport work to London, so please propose work available to
be posted or delivered to the site in person.

If you submit work to this symposium, you will be expected to
attend.

Proposal submission deadline: 27 June

10-12th September 2008: Women In Games Conference - Keynotes
Announced and Speaker Submission Deadline Extended

Women in Games Conference University of Warwick, UK
Keynotes announced and Speaker Submission Deadline Extended

The Women In Games conference encourages research and seeks to
promote careers for women within the games industry. If games
are to become a true sibling medium to music and cinema, the
industry needs greater balance in its audience and its
workforce. The Women In Games conference welcomes participants
from both industry and academia, providing a forum for
presentation and discussion of issues relating to all aspects of
women's involvement in games, including game development, game
playing and women as portrayed within games.

Although this conference is concerned with women and games
please note that men are also very welcome to participate! The

17-18 October 2008: The Viennese Cafe as an Urban Site of
Cultural Exchange. Victoria & Albert Museum and Royal College of
Art, London

The cultural significance of the cafe provides a central theme
for scholars from the fields of visual, social, literary and
cultural history to meet and explore the similarities,
differences and shared points of interest in recent research
into Vienna 1900. Although the Viennese coffeehouse has long
been recognised as a site of importance, there has as yet been
no in-depth scholarly investigation of how it functioned in
relation to the broader culture of the city at this time. The
programme examines the cafe from a variety of perspectives, with
the aim of deepening our understanding of the nature of this
urban space, and the cultural exchanges and performances that
went on there.

Keynote speakers: Dr Steven Beller, independent scholar,
Washington DC and Professor Edward Timms, University of Sussex.

The conference is part of the programme of research of the
AHRC-funded Vienna Cafe Project, which is run jointly by the
School of History of Art, Film and Visual Media, Birkbeck,
University of London and the Department of Design History at the
Royal College of Art. It is organised to coincide with the
exhibition Vienna Cafe 1900, which will be shown in the
galleries of the RCA between 13 - 24 October 2008.

Booking is now open.

Summer Academic Working Group 2008

This information might be interesting for some PhD students.

We are happy to announce the 2008 Summer Academic Working Group.
This peer accountability and feedback system allows users from
anywhere in the world to share documents and feedback. Working
group participants participate in "clusters" around a common
discipline, theme, or type of work. Clusters exchange work on a
regular basis - normally every two weeks - by posting it to a
secure course and project management site at the University of
Michigan. Participants then provide and receive feedback for
members of their cluster. Having a deadline helps everyone get
more done, and having feedback makes what's done better.

For more information, or for sign-up instructions, go to

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lpowner/workgroup.htm.
