Workshop on Professional Usability vs Academic HCI
Call for position papers
Date: 2nd September, 2008
www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~pcairns/AcademiaIndustry.html
British HCI 2008 http://www.hci2008.org/
*************************************************
Do students coming out of university have the skills the usability
industry needs? Do they sufficient knowledge? Do they have the right
knowledge? Where is the field of HCI now in terms of incorporating the
needs of industry versus academia? How do we support the creation of
well trained professionals while also allowing the development of
rounded researchers? What is our ideal and do we reach it?
These are the questions that we aim to address in the workshop "The
challenges faced by academia preparing students for industry: What we
teach and what we do."
You are invited to submit a position paper of not more than two pages
addressing these or related questions on the overlap between industry
needs and academic delivery of HCI, usability and interaction design.
The aims of this workshop are three fold.
1. Take stock of where we stand as both an academic and industry
discipline on what we teach, what we research and what we do/apply in
the real world.
2. Rejuvenate the dialogue between the two segments of our discipline
about the needs and goals of each for learning and practice.
3. Most importantly, develop a framework and suggestions in order to
redress the gaps that exist on an ongoing basis. The framework will
broadly attempt to produce recommendations:
a. For academia on possible changes to curriculum for both
undergraduates and masters level students.
b. For industry on how to become more involved in expressing their
training needs and influencing student projects and teaching.
c. For building more inclusive relationships and better
communications between academia and business.
Workshop participants will also be invited to participate in forming a
permanent workgroup that will address these questions on a continuing
basis in the British HCI community.
Submission details
Papers should be not more than two pages long and should set out you

producing HCI professionals. You can present problems, issues and
challenges that we face now or may face in future as well as things that
are done well or how the differences between academia and industry are
valuable.
