CILIP runs a two day course "Designing a library database using Microsoft Access" which might be useful.
This two-day hands-on course is designed for library and information staff working with small specialist collections that need a functional library database, at minimum cost.
Benefits of attending
Participants will learn how to set up an MS Access database from scratch with simple, detailed instructions. The database can be used for:
cataloguing and classifying stock
managing loans
serials management
indexing / abstracting
cataloguing specialist collections (maps, photographs, local history collections, cuttings, music, manuscripts, archival materials)
By the end of the event participants will:

applied cataloguing principles to the creation of data fields
created a catalogue of records
created a user interface
leave with their database ready to use in the workplace
