> Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University (UK).

> The project:

> This project will research the theory and application of multiple classifier systems. The project is jointly funded by a FTSE 100 consumer goods company and the EPSRC. Thus, in addition to the usual PhD experience, this studentship will provide an opportunity for you to occasionally work at the company's site to understand how these tools might be applied in an industrial R&D setting.
>
> The studentship is offered with three and a half years of funding to cover a PhD degree. Full funding is offered including tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of £14,940 per year. Applicants must satisfy the EPSRC's eligibility criteria: the studentship is open to UK citizens usually resident in the UK or EU citizens who have spent the previous 3 years in the UK.

> This studentship will be restricted to students of a high quality - the minimum entry requirement is the equivalent of a 1st or high 2:1 at undergraduate level, whilst an MSc in statistics is desirable. It would also be an advantage to
> i) have previous experience of computer programming (e.g. R or MATLAB).
> ii) have studied one or more of the following subject areas as part of a mathematical discipline at undergraduate level is also desirable: multivariate statistics, statistical pattern recognition, generalized linear models.

> The department:

> The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a large and vibrant department, embracing a Mathematics Section and three Statistics Sections, which combined have received top ratings in external assessments for research and teaching quality. The Department has a large and vibrant statistical group with a high international reputation The group consists of over 20 staff with 30-40 RAs, PhD students and visiting PhD students. The Department also contains a HEFCE funded Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Postgraduate Statistics.

> For RAE2001, the Statistics return was graded at 5* and was the largest single institution Statistics group to achieve 5*. Subsequently, this grading was increased to 6* to reflect the combination of historical strength and recent growth in statistical activity at Lancaster.
