Hi everyone,
Im really sorry but a combination of tight deadline, technological problems
between lead institutions and staff absence (meaning that the bid can not be
signed off at one of the host institutions) means that we are having to hold
back from submitting our ESRC network bid.
IDS, OU and Bradford (the host institutions) have all spoken with each other
this morning and we all felt that rather than facing the possible wrath of
handing in a bid without official approval we should not submit.
I know that a number of you have really helped with ideas and contributing in
the drafting of the bid. This will not be lost, when we decided not to
submit we did it in the knowledge that Leverhulme also fund networks.
The benefit of leverhulme over ESRC would mean that if we were successful we
would
- get a full time network administrator paid for (I was going to be doing it all
for free with the two other leads!)
- get three years of funding which would help us develop the thoughts and ideas
through a network over a longer period of time. We figured this would enable to
us to get a far deeper ongoing reflection than 3 events over a year really
allow.
- it would enable us to develop our links with the global south and north
america far better because the bid allows travel from the uk network to
international partners. This would mean a far more equal partnership and enable
us from the UK to have a contextual understanding of those involved from
overseas through visits.
- the deadline is 1 september. This would allow us to talk in a deeper way about
what our partner institutions overseas want out of the participation/ network
(rather than bringing them over here for our needs). We think kthis is more
ethical.
- We would actually find out the result of our bid and it would start before the
ESRC results/ start date even though the application date is later.
We hope that you understand our decision and are still willing to support us in
developing the Leverhulme bid. Obviously we need to agree a leverhulme bid with
our institutions and our research committees first (we expect that this will
take a few weeks).
If any one wants to opt out then let me know otherwise I will assume that you
are still interested in being involved and lending your support. We will of
course circulate any further etails as we know them.
Best wishes
EJ
