Hello,

I would like to be a part of the Network as I am engaged in a PV project in Nepal for a year with ActionAid looking at how communities and local NGOs can use PV to research and solve their own problems. This is part of my Masters at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in Participation, Power and Social Change. I am especially interested in making PV sustainable, effective and affordable.

The overview of my research on children and a changing climate is here: http://www.childreninachangingclimate.org/project_5.htm. With children, we are conducting 6 community-driven PV studies (2 in urban area, 2 in plains near Indian border, and 2 in Himalaya). I am also overseeing 3 studies with women and climate concerns. I personally have been a professional video and multimedia producer for 15 years in the US so am enthused to bring those skills to development.

While my topic is on climate change, I will also be exploring:

How can video become a sustainable, easy-to-use advocacy tool for marginalized groups to research and solve their own problems?

•-- What are the necessary elements of a training workshop for a local NGO and community to be able to use video for research and advocacy?

•-- Who should be trained in participatory video (capacity requirements)?

•-- What technical resources are needed for simple videos?

•-- What financial resources are needed to create simple advocacy videos?

•-- In a people-centered advocacy framework, how can the participatory video process help solve local problems… as well as be used a resource for national and international advocacy?

•

-- Do visuals have stronger influence than human interaction? The written word?

•

-- Does video open new spaces for two-way dialog? Does it have more value than traditional means of communications in changing power dynamics for positive outcomes?

•

-- Can video add value as part the advocacy process to identify and analyze the problem, especially in areas of prioritizing issues and addressing power relationships in a community?

If you want more information or have any good resources/advice, please email me at [log in to unmask]

Cheers,

Tamara Plush
