The term 'agent' was in common use at Grassington, in Yorkshire, by the 1770s - e.g. "... John Summers who is agent for Mr Thornhill at North Coalgrovehead [lead] Mine ...".
In the late 1960s and early 1970s (at least) the NCB had a range of titles for colliery managers - presumably related to the size of the pit and hence salary scales.

Most mines had a manager, a few (probably slightly larger ones) had an Agent/Manager, and the biggest pits had a Colliery General Manager.
