Purpose of Job
Cefas Applied Technology (AT) seeks an experienced Senior Software Developer to work within the AT development teams.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
We deliver excellent IT solutions, covering a broad spectrum of regulatory and scientific needs, to a range of internal and external customers. Our systems are deployed on the PC desktop, via Citrix and as Internet/Intranet web sites. They are typically data-based and often use GIS as a presentation and analytical tool, alongside bespoke data processing and reporting functions. We operate an ISO-9001-compliant Business Management System. You will be a key member of the team, working across multiple projects from inception through to final delivery. You will be expected to support all stages of the project lifecycle. Training will be provided where required.
Qualification/Experience/Skills
Academic qualifications required for direct entry to this Cefas Pay Band 6 post is a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. It is essential that you can meet the following requirements:
* A good understanding of current software architectures and how to apply them in a wide range of software projects.
* The ability to work creatively with customers to define their requirements and translate them into effective design documents.
* Substantial experience of developing GIS solutions using MapInfo or ESRI products, including deployment via web browsers.
* Demonstrable experience of application development within the Microsoft Visual Studio .Net or V6 environments.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to promote your ideas to customers and colleagues alike.
* Experience of team working.
Experience of some or all of the following would be preferable:
* UML design methodology.
* Designing, developing and deploying multi-tier applications with web- and windows- interfaces, across complex environments.
* Designing and tuning databases, preferably using Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005. Experience with Oracle or other equivalents databases will be considered.
* Working with the Visual Studio Team System environment.
* Working within an ISO-9001 quality system, or equivalent.
* Managing and developing staff.
Additional Information
This post is in Cefas Pay Band 6. The salary range is from £30,252 to £37,727 pa. In addition there is the opportunity for all staff to earn a performance related bonus. The salary is paid monthly by credit transfer. If you are already an established civil servant you can obtain further information from your Personnel Division about rules which may provide a more favourable starting salary than is allowed for under the previous paragraph. Other rules will apply if you are serving on a casual basis or on a fixed term appointment. Part-time working and job share applicants are also welcome.
