the dan dare connection seems a bit weak to me. if nothing else it was a
rather late (not to say pale) imitation of the Hugo Gernsback/Frank R
Paul style pioneered in the 1920s and instantiated by what W, Gibson
calls "ray gun gothic" (aspects of art deco) plus the streamlined
moderne styles of the late 1930s. Whilst the US had Chevys and cadillacs
with fins we got the ford anglia. plus of course the rockets are all
pretty much based on the A4/V2. Still, maybe having them fired at us was
an inspiration? Certainly a different take on the "white heat" of
technology...
