Hi Stephen,
Admittedly I am neither a university or college but I thought I would
respond as this is a subject I have recently looked into.
We have just decided to start streaming live video of the weekly web
design podcast I produce (boagworld.com/live) and so have been
investigating the options.
Adobe offer some fairly impressive high-end solutions in this area
using their flash media server. I know this is being used for an
upcoming virtual conference I am speaking at called Singularity
(singularity08.com). Apparently it can manage over 1000 simultaneous
connections if configured correctly. Although this looks good I would
argue it is overkill if you are at the "proof of concept" stage.
Until we know whether it is going to be a popular service we are
simply using ustream.tv. I have looked at the alternatives but ustream
had all of the features I wanted...
1. The ability to record the live events and make them available later
2. An associated chatroom to allow for full interaction
3. The ability to invite others to join the broadcast via web cam.
The quality is not wonderful but does the job. We have done some
initial tests and I have seen it handle 50 simultaneous connections
with ease. We are doing our first proper show tomorrow (10:30AM) so I
will know better what its capacity is then.
Finally you might want to check out camtwist (http://allocinit.com/index.php?title=CamTwist
) which allows you to do real time editing of streams. For example you
can...
1. Insert video
2. Add lower thirds and other visual effects
3. Switch to a desktop feed
4. Switch between cameras
Anyway, I hope that helps.
Thanks,
Paul
