Hi James
Becta hasn't approved ANY products.
The Becta Framework is for Procurement of SERVICES... If you are involved in a procurement and use the framework, and your statement of requirement says you want to use moodle, or boddington, or COSE, or Blackboard, or whatever that's fine..
The framework is there to help big roll outs, and was mainly for LA's and schools.
If you want more info, or want to talk through drop me a line..
I wrote this simple outline below last year to help explain, as I was asked a lot about the LPF
-----------------
Summary
A learning platform is a collection of applications that work together to support learning.
The Functional requirements describe what it does: http://industry.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=17320
The Technical Specifications describe how it does it. http://industry.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=18298
The procurement framework allows approved services to be bought.
There is a Government target that all schools will be using a Learning Platform that integrates with their Information Management Systems by 2010.
Targets
The Government E-strategy has two schools’ sector targets related to learning platforms. These will have an impact on the FE system through raised student expectation, potential for improved data exchange at transition, and interoperability.
By March 2008 all local authorities will be providing access to a personal online learning space, which supports learning through a range of systems:
• Tools such as email, messaging, forums, wiki, blogs to support communication and collaboration.
• An area, personal to the user for storing files and data.
• Tools to support the creation, development and management of digital content.
• Safe and secure anytime, any place access.
A personal online learning space could be provided by a learning platform.
By March 2010 all schools will be using a learning platform which integrates with their information management systems.
What is a Learning Platform?
To allow effective comparison of different systems it was decided to move away from vague terms like MLE, VLE and CMS and define a learning platform by its functions, and identify technical specifications which enable those functions. A learning platform is not expected to be a single product but rather a collection of interoperable systems or modules possibly from different suppliers. Each may perform discrete functions which support content management, curriculum mapping and planning, or learner engagement and administration.
What is the Procurement Framework?
The functional requirements and technical specifications were used as the basis of a procurement process which identified ten service providers capable of delivering large scale solutions, and providing time and cost savings to schools and Local Authorities by removing the need to undertake a full competitive procurement instead running a mini competition. The first test of the process resulted in the procurement of a managed service across London powered by Fronter.
What do FE Institutions need to know?
The schools’ targets mean that by 2008 school leavers will increasingly have had access and experience of a personal online learning space, so raising their expectations when moving to FE. Gradually those who have had regular access to a personal online learning space since their primary school will enter FE bringing their data as a part of their ongoing portfolio. This could ease their transition to FE and may require little more than providing network storage space for files, though it may require the facility to accept e-portfolio xml files.
There is potential for FE institutions to benefit from understanding the Local Authority provision to feeder schools in their region, as interoperability could improve data transfer and accuracy with a reduction of costs.

To me this screams of WHY DIDN'T BECTA APPROVE MOODLE?
I've just been told our LA is going Fronter. Had a look at it yesterday and
wasn't impressed.
If you have not seen Newbury College's new themes for download have a look
