REMINDER THAT VOLUNTARY TREATMENT REFERRAL ON ARREST ALSO WORKED
Though mandatory testing and referral to treatment assessment are now the order of the day in
Britain, this national study of arrest referral suggested that voluntary schemes reached many
thousands of criminally active but previously untreated drug users and contributed to reductions in

RECIDIVISM REDUCED BY REHABILITATION-ORIENTED COURT FOR DRUG-RELATED OFFENDERS
From Australia the first randomised evaluation of a drug court outside the USA has confirmed that by
tightly integrating rehabilitation-oriented criminal justice supervision with treatment, drug courts
can reduce reoffending compared to normal adjudication.

ROUTINE SCHOOL DRUG PREVENTION PROGRAMME HELPS DELAY REGULAR DRINKING
From the Netherlands, a rare indication that a real-world, school-based drug prevention programme
occupying just a few lessons a year can retard growth in substance use (especially regular drinking
and to a lesser extent regular smoking) in the early teenage years.

SKILLS FOR ADOLESCENCE LESSONS MODESTLY RETARD GROWTH OF SUBSTANCE USE
The first rigorous follow-up study of a drug education programme popular and influential in Britain
found that it modestly retarded growth of substance use in 12-13-year-old school pupils.
