Dear All,

*Apologies for any cross-posting**

Do hope that all is well with you. Just wondering whether I might ask a
favour of you, please?

We are currently advertising an ESRC CASE Studentship in the area of
Citizenship Education and I was wondering whether you would be kind enough
to circulate the details of this amongst the Masters students (or other
suitable postgrads) in your School/Department please? Just in case someone
is interested.

Your help would be much appreciated.

The advert is below.

Best wishes,

Angharad Beckett.

**************************
ESRC CASE PhD Studentship - start date September 2008

Location: University of Leeds, School of Sociology and Social Policy

Title of Project: Citizenship Education, Equality and Diversity: exploring
responses to citizenship education in English state secondary schools

This three year project rests upon a collaboration between the School of
Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds and The Citizenship
Foundation, an independent London-based education and participation
charity that exists to encourage and enable individuals to play an
effective role in democratic society. The research has two inter-related
aims. First, to explore whether teachers' own backgrounds and beliefs, and
their perceptions of the social/cultural backgrounds of their pupils,
impact upon the manner in which they implement/interpret the citizenship
curriculum. Second, to investigate how a socially diverse range of pupils
perceive their personal understandings of citizenship to accord with the
model of citizenship transmitted to them by their teacher/s and in their
school.

Academic Supervisors: Professor Nick Ellison, Dr Angharad Beckett

The award covers tuition fees for three years at the Home/EU rate. In
addition, the successful candidate will receive a £14k p.a. tax-free
maintenance award. The first year will see the student primarily based in
Leeds, while the second and third years will provide a unique opportunity
for the student to be based at the Citizenship Foundation in London.

Applications are welcomed from enthusiastic candidates who have a good
honours degree (2:1 or above) in sociology, social/public policy,
education or political science. Due to funding restrictions applicants
should be UK or EU nationals and hold (or be about to be awarded) a
Master's Degree in Research Methods that has ESRC recognition (or must
demonstrate that the level of training already undertaken is in line with
both the generic and subject specific requirements set out in the ESRC
Postgraduate Training Guidelines). Desirable skills include good
communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team and experience
of working with children or young people.

**Because this studentship will involve working with children under the
age of 16, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a
Criminal Records Bureau check at enhanced level.**

The School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds is a
dynamic department with a strong commitment to excellence in both research
and teaching. It was awarded 5A in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise,
a grade that indicates standards of international excellence, and both The
Times and The Guardian newspapers rank the school in the top ten sociology
and social policy departments in the UK. It has a lively postgraduate
environment with over 40 postgraduate research students.

To make an application please send three copies of the following: your
current CV; a covering letter stating reasons for your suitability for and
interest in this studentship; where available, a transcript of your
Masters degree module grades; and the names and contact details of 2
referees.

Applications should be sent to Prof. Nick Ellison, Head of School, School
of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT.

For an informal discussion relating to this studentship please contact

or Dr Beckett tel +44 (0)113 343 4409, email [log in to unmask]
