Dear colleagues

Please see the following and the attached, and circulate to friends within and beyond

the university. I'm really very sorry in advance for inevitable cross-posting.

Claire

History

All terror and immigration charges have been dropped, but Hicham Yezza still faces

deportation.

Hicham Yezza, an Algerian national, is a former PhD student and current employee of the

University of Nottingham. He faces deportation to Algeria on Sunday 1st June. This

follows his unjust arrest under the Terrorism Act 2000 on Wednesday 14th May and

release without charge six days later. He was subsequently arrested for immigration

offences due to Home Office confusion over his paperwork. Before these could be

properly addressed by his solicitor in preparation for a trial date set in July, these

charges too were dropped and Hich was told he would be deported immediately. The

authorities are clearly trying to circumvent the criminal justice system and force

Hicham out of the country. The desire for justice is clearly not the driving force

behind this, as Hicham was happy to stand trial and prove his innocence.

His friends, family and supporters are still trying to establish why this has happened

and strongly suspect that the Home Office is embarrassed by the police handling of the

initial incident. So-called “radical materials” that Hich was found to be in possession

of were an Al Qaeda manual downloaded by a student friend as part of his research into

political Islam. The student had been requested to look at the text by his Dissertation

supervisor as part of his MA research. He had emailed it to Hich for printing because

he couldn’t afford to get it printed himself. For this ‘crime’ Hich is in Campsfield

detention centre with no idea of what the future holds.

What can you do?

1/ Most urgently, we urge you to use the model letter attached or write one yourself

and e-mail and/or fax it the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. Quote Home Office reference

number Y76064.

She has the power to stop Hicham’s deportation

Please also:

2/ Spread the word

This case is already generating a large amount of media coverage and interest from

concerned individuals and groups across the world, but anything you can do to raise the

profile would be very helpful.

3/ Lobby Liam Byrne is the Minister of State (Borders and Immigration). As such he also

has the power to stop Hicham’s deportation.

4/ Contact the university

Despite the fact that they are his employer, the university instigated his arrest and

have done nothing to help him, seeking instead to smear him. Please send polite emails

to [log in to unmask]
