From Sunday Schools to Christian Education:
The Christian Formation of Contemporary Youth in Historical Perspective
The Open University and Christian Education
Based in Milton Keynes and Birmingham
Full-time three year studentship
Applications are invited for this collaborative studentship
funded by the AHRC/ESRC Religion and
Society programme starting in October 2008. The studentship is being offered
jointly by the Religious Studies Department of The Open University and
Christian Education, and will give the successful candidate the opportunity to
relate academic inquiry to the practical concerns of a contemporary voluntary
organization. You will study the decline and eventual collapse of the Sunday
School movement in twentieth-century England, and apply insights derived
from history to the evaluation of Christian formation among young
people in the present-day churches.
You should hold a Masters degree in a relevant discipline
(such as Religious Studies, History, Theology, Education or Youth Work) or
expect successfully to complete such a degree before taking up the studentship
The successful candidate will receive the AHRC/ESRC standard maintenance grant - in
2007/2008
approx. £12,940 - with an additional contribution of £1000 per annum from
Christian Education.
