============
“Social mobility stalls in Britain” …. “Nothing has changed for our poor
children”…Deprived UK children 'still trapped by poverty’”….
These were just some of the headlines that followed the publication of the
Sutton Trust report “Recent Changes in Intergenerational Mobility in
Britain” by Dr Jo Blanden and Professor Stephen Machin (Centre for Economic
Performance, LSE) in late 2007.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of the SRA and to
celebrate this important milestone we are running a series of events that
will reflect on changes that have taken place in society and social
research which reflect our anniversary theme of ‘Trends: looking back,
moving forward - 30 years of the SRA’.
The SRA is delighted that as part of our anniversary celebrations Jo
Blanden will give a seminar on the important ongoing research programme on
intergenerational (or “social”) mobility - the links between parents’
socio-economic status and their children’s socio-economic position in
adulthood.
Jo will review the findings from her analysis of changing intergenerational
mobility using birth cohort studies and outline how it seems there has been
little change in the last 30 years. She will also examine how the picture
in the UK compares with other advanced nations.
This seminar takes place at the Nuffield Foundation (28 Bedford Square,
London WC1B 3JS
) and starts at 5pm (with light refreshments from 4.30). The event is free
of charge for SRA members whilst there is a small charge of £10 for
non-members.
Directions to the Nuffield Foundation are available at:
http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/go/contactus/page_17.html).
The seminar will start promptly at 5:00pm, and will end at around 6.00pm.
Please email [log in to unmask] to register your attendance, providing
your name and affiliation. You may also simply turn up on the evening, but
priority is given to those who have pre-registered.
The Social Research Association looks forward to welcoming you.
